When sailing to another country, transit times differ based on whether the departure port is on the West Coast or on the East Coast. We can tighten up your estimated time frame once we get more specific information from you.
What Do You Need to Ship a Boat or Yacht?
We are not responsible for duty, VAT and tax payments on the boats that we handle. These payments are solely the responsibility of the boat owner. Having said that, boats that are manufactured in the U.S. usually do not have to pay duty in the destination if they have a certificate of origin. The following are the requirements when making your shipment:
- Permit for the trailer (needed before the boat arrives at destination port)
- Certificate of origin
- Boat title/ownership documents
- Bill of sale
- Photo ID
Shipping a Boat or Yacht: A Look at the Process
Boating enthusiasts often like to buy their boats in the United States where the selection is more diverse than in other countries. If this describes you, you will now want to ship your boat back home to from the U.S. Here’s a look at how the process works:
- Get a quote from us.
- We will need the type of boat and the dimensions.
- We will then arrange for the boat to be picked up for delivery at the port.
- We will load the boat onto the ship, depending on the shipping and loading options chosen.
- Once it is secured, your boat will set sail.
- At the arrival port, it will be safely unloaded.
- You boat will then be delivered to its final destination.
Boat Shipping Options
Here are the three types of shipping options we offer to get your boat from the USA to another country.
Containerized Shipping
Boats measuring less than 28′ by 8.6’ can benefit from containerized shipping when going from the U.S. Your boat will be fully secured in the container for safe transport.
RORO Shipping
RORO (roll on, roll off) is ideal for boats that are on a trailer or a cradle. Your boat will be towed onto the ship and then towed off the ship once at its destination. This option is for boats 15 feet and below in height.
Lift on, Lift off
Because many of the boats that we ship are too big for RORO and containerized shipping, we offer LOLO shipping. This is when your boat is loaded onto the ship using a crane. The boat is then strapped into position on the deck of the ship. At the destination port, another crane will get your boat off the ship.
How Much Does it Cost to Ship a Boat or Yacht?
From the boat’s dimensions to the shipping option you choose, there are a multitude of factors that contribute to price. Please call us for a free quote to get a more accurate price quote for shipping a boat overseas.
Here are some generalizations to consider:
- Usually, bigger boats cost more to ship.
- The location of the boat also contributes to cost. We will need to arrange for it to be delivered to the departure port.
- The loading option also contributes to cost. There are additional charges where the lift on, lift off method is used.
- Another factor contributing to cost is the distance between the departure and destination ports.

The following are some of the types of boat that we handle.

Shipping Options

Container Shipping
If your boat fits into a shipping container, this is the method that we will use to get it from the U.S to its destination. We make sure that the boat is secure before shipment.

Lift-on Lift-off
This is an option for those whose boats are too big for RoRo and containerized shipping. If your boat has a cradle, then it can be lifted onto and off the ship using a crane.

RoRo Shipping
RoRo stands for roll-on, roll-off. It’s an option for boats that are on trailers. Your boat will be towed onto the ship at the departure port. It will be towed off on arrival at its destination.

Flat Rack
Your boat can also be placed on a flat rack before it is loaded onto the ship. Loading is done using a crane. This option is for very large yachts. We fully secure your boat before shipment.
